(expo)nentieel starts with one artist, who invites two artists, each of whom in turn invites two more — and so on, like a chain letter branching through the artistic landscape. Each artist thus becomes the curator of whoever comes next. On paper such a series grows fast: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 — sixty-three artists in barely six generations.
Reality is more wayward: not every branch finds a sequel, and at some point we have to call a halt ourselves — the building would become too small. It comes to forty-nine.
